Startup benefits
AWS Activate
Overview
AWS Activate gives early-stage startups cloud credits, technical support and training to build on Amazon Web Services. The programme is tiered: what a team receives depends on its stage and on whether it applies directly or through an approved provider such as an accelerator or investor. Credits can offset infrastructure, data services and AI or machine-learning usage, and the current ceiling is published on the official page rather than fixed here. Startups already building on AWS can also reach the startup advisor tooling and go-to-market resources that sit alongside the credits.
Who it's for
It fits a startup with a product in development, a small team and a bill it would rather not pay while it proves the business. Companies at the idea stage with no code and no account often get less than founders expect, while teams with a live workload and a clear growth plan get more. It is for startups, not for established enterprises or personal projects. Check the eligibility rules for company age, funding and prior AWS usage before applying.
What you get
The core benefit is credit against AWS services, which buys runway for infrastructure, data and model calls. Activate also brings technical support, architecture guidance and access to training, plus advisor tools that help scaffold a project. Some tiers add go-to-market help, introductions to investors and partner offers. The mix changes with the tier, so treat the official page as the source for what your stage actually receives.
How to apply
Create an AWS account, then apply through the Activate page either directly or with an organisation code from an approved provider. The application asks about the company, the product, the stage, funding and how you intend to use the cloud. Direct applications are reviewed by AWS; provider applications are usually reviewed faster because the partner vouches for the team. After approval, credits appear against the account and expire on a schedule, so plan the build around the credit window instead of assuming they last indefinitely.
Timing
Rolling. Applications are accepted continuously rather than in a single annual window, credits are granted per approval and each grant carries its own expiry. There is no fixed cohort. Confirm the current terms, tiers and credit period on the official page.
How to stand out
Apply with a concrete workload: name the services, estimate the monthly spend and show what the credits unlock in the next quarter. Get a provider code if you are in an accelerator, because the review is shorter and the tier is often higher. Keep the architecture simple enough to explain in one diagram, and track spend from day one so the first review has evidence. Reapply for higher tiers after you hit the milestones you promised.
FAQ
Does my startup need funding to qualify?
No. Stage and funding shape the tier rather than the eligibility alone; read the current requirements on the official page before applying.
Do unused credits carry over?
Credits are granted per approval with their own expiry window, so check the term attached to your grant rather than assuming they roll over.
