Slush 100
Overview
Slush 100 is the startup competition at Slush, the founder-focused conference held in Helsinki each autumn. A hundred companies are selected from the applicant pool, twenty of them pitch on the startup stage, and three reach the final where one wins an equity-free cash prize. The format is deliberately compressed: the first cut turns on a one-minute pitch, which rewards founders who can state a problem and a number without preamble. Investors judge the later rounds, so the competition doubles as a fundraising room.
Who it's for
It suits early-stage companies, usually before a large institutional round, that can travel to Helsinki and put a founder on stage. The field is international and sector-agnostic; the judges are generalist investors, so a niche company must explain its market in plain language. You do not need to be Nordic to apply. Confirm the current stage criteria in the application, because the definition of early-stage shifts between editions.
What you get
The winner takes an equity-free cash prize, and Slush publishes the amount for the current edition on its page. The hundred selected companies get partner credits and perks, visibility in the event's meeting tool, and the attention of investors who are already at Slush. For most teams the meetings matter more than the trophy: the competition is a shortcut to conversations that would otherwise take a year of warm introductions.
How to apply
Apply through Slush's startup application with the company, team, traction and market. A jury screens the pool down to a hundred, who receive the Slush 100 tag in the event's meeting tool and a one-minute pitch slot; twenty semifinalists then pitch on the startup stage, and three finalists compete in the final. Because the first gate is a one-minute pitch, write it as a script, cut every sentence that does not carry a fact, and rehearse it until it fits without rushing.
Timing
Annual, tied to Slush in the autumn: applications open months before the event, the hundred are announced ahead of it, and the rounds run during the conference. Dates change between editions, so confirm the current application window and stage schedule on the official Slush 100 page.
How to stand out
The one-minute pitch is the whole competition for most applicants: draft it at around a hundred and twenty words, then record yourself and cut. Lead with the user and the proof, not the vision. Use the meeting tool as soon as you are selected, because investor calendars fill before the event starts. Plan travel and stand logistics early, and if you reach the final, keep the same story — judges compare you across rounds and inconsistency reads as a pivot.
FAQ
Is the prize really equity-free?
Slush describes the Slush 100 prize as equity-free, and publishes the amount for the current edition on its page. Read that rather than relying on older coverage.
Can companies outside Finland apply?
Yes. Slush 100 is open to early-stage startups internationally; the event is in Helsinki, so plan for travel. Check the current application for stage and eligibility criteria.
